Abstract

Monochlorodimethyl ether is recovered from spent chloromethylation solutions by entrainment in a stream of inert gas which is passed through the solution at 0-60 DEG C. The spent solutions which are contaminated with, e.g., catalysts and by-products are, e.g., those resulting from the chloromethylation of divinyl compounds and polymers thereof. Specified inert gases are air, nitrogen and hydrogen chloride. The preferred gas is hydrogen chloride as the resulting mixture of hydrogen chloride and monochlorodimethyl ether, which also contains some methylol recovered from the spent solution, can be used in the synthesis of further monochlorodimethyl ether by reaction with additional methylol or methanol and formaldehyde or a polymeric formaldehyde. Alternatively, the monochlorodimethyl ether can be recovered directly by cooling the emerging gas stream. Examples relate to the use of hydrogen chloride.
