Abstract

A method for continuously manufacturing shaped coke without a binder comprises shaping a mixture of coke, e.g. fluid coke, and a coking coal at a temperature within the plastic range of the coal, e.g. about 400 DEG C., and heating the shapes so formed with a granular heat carrier, e.g. sand, at a temperature of 900 DEG to 1200 DEG C., the proportions of shapes and sand being such that the shapes are heated to 800 DEG to 1100 DEG C. in not more than 30 minutes. The shapes are then separated from the sand and gas-cooled. Particulate coal and coke are employed, and one or both may be preheated, the relative amounts (coke to coal) being from 5 to 1 to 1 to 3 by weight, and shaping may be in pelletizing drums or roller or ram presses. Relative proportions of sand to shapes respectively are 5 to 1 to 20 to 1 by weight. The sand is circulated through a heater. Three examples are given, coking times of 10 and 20 minutes being mentioned.
