Starting; reversing.- Engines started by compressed air admitted through a separate valve have their starting, normal admission and exhaust, and fuel valves actuated by separate cams through reversing- gear comprising one or a pair of oscillating distance-pieces such as 3, upon which bears a valve-rod 7 connected at its lower end by a link 9 and arm 11 to a shaft 10 carrying a toothed quadrant 14 gearing with a wormwheel 13. For starting in a forward or backward direction, the arms 11 occupy one of the extreme positions a c, d c, the arms assuming an intermediate position b c, e c when the engine runs under its own power. Projections which engage the rollers on the rods of the fuel and starting valves are formed on the ends of the distance-pieces remote from the shaft 1. Each pair of distance-pieces may be formed in one piece, or they may be mounted on separate shafts. The reversing-shaft 10 may control the fuel pump.
