A garment-pressing machine comprises an upper movable head 10 carried on a rocking arm 4 pivoted to one arm of a bell crank lever 8 below the lower buck 2 and moved substantially vertically thereby, movement of lever 8 to cause upward movement of the pivot 9 being prevented when the head is pulled into position close to the lower buck 2 and downward movement being restrained by spring means 20, the other arm of the bell crank lever being coupled to operating means to force the rocking arm to pivot down against spring means 20 to apply the final pressure. Head 10 is moved by means of handle 11 and balancing springs 12, 13 balance one another when head 10 is at the highest point of its arc substantially over pivot 9. The final pressure is applied to buck 10 by a treadle 14 through a linkage 15 and pivoted levers 16,17 connected respectively to the machine frame and lever 8. The treadle may be locked down by means releasable by a Bowden cable e.g. pivoted claw 21 may engage a roller on the pivot 19 connecting linkage 15 to lever 16. A blocking piece 24 may be arranged to ride on top of roller 25 to prevent the pressure from being applied to the press when it is open. Alternatively, Figs 2 and 4 (not shown), the bell crank lever 8 may be operated to apply the final pressure by a compressed air cylinder 7.
