Abstract

1,048,182. Servo-operated master cylinders. GIRLING Ltd. July 17, 1963 [July 18, 1962], No. 27558/62. Heading F2F. In a combined master cylinder and servomotor a part at least of the master cylinder is housed within a chamber in the forward end of the servomotor which is sealed-off from the power chambers. As shown, the casing 11 of the servomotor has a front wall portion 13 to which is secured an inwardly-projecting barrel 12 within which the rear end of the master cylinder 10 is received. A sleeve 15 slides on the barrel by means of a seal 16 and is in turn secured to a hub member 24 which slides in the rear part of the casing. The piston 30 of the master cylinder extends rearwardly in the chamber enclosed by this assembly and is connected by a pushrod 27 to a resilient button 40 seated in the forward end of the hub member, so sealing the chamber from the valve structure which is located within the hub member. The servomotor is of the vacuum suspended type having two diaphragms 17, 18 and a dividing wall forming two vacuum chambers 20, 21 and two power chambers 34, 35. The diaphragms are supported by respective plates 32, 33 secured to the sleeve 15 in association with a surrounding sleeve 19 which forms an annular space 22 for communication between the two vacuum chambers 20, 21. The power chambers 34, 35 communicate with one another by a peripheral passage 37. The valve assembly is located in the sliding hub member 24 so as to provide follow-up of the operating pedal which is connected to an operating rod 25. The rod 25 acts on a valve member 28 normally contacting an annular diaphragm valve 42 to maintain the latter off a seat 45 of the hub member whereby vacuum is communicated to the power chambers via radial passages 44 in the hub member. On depression of the pedal rod 25 urges valve member 28 forwardly until the diaphragm valve 42 engages the seat 45 under the influence of springs 49, 50, closing off the vacuum connection to the power chambers. Further movement of valve member 28 cracks the valve 42 to admit atmospheric air via a filter 39 and inlet chamber 23 to the power chambers 34, 35. Feel is provided by the resilient button 40 which when compressed due to the force exerted on piston 30 extrudes into the interior of the hub member to urge the valve member 28 rearwardly.
