Abstract

In a fence wire tightening device embodying a housing 10 in which is rotatably mounted a spindle 13 carrying a ratchet wheel 16 adapted to be connected to a fence wire which is to be tightened, a pawl 19 comprises a member of channel-shaped configuration and the web 20 of the channel extends through a triangular shaped aperture 17 formed in one of the sides 12 of the housing 10 adjacent to the ratchet wheel, the two sides of the channel being disposed respectively on opposite sides of the side 12 of the housing such that in the operative position of the device the pawl 19 will take up a position under the influence of gravity in which one end of the web 20 of the channel will engage the teeth of the ratchet wheel. The pawl 19 may be provided with an outwardly extending projection 21 which can be gripped for the purpose of turning the pawl into a position in which the web will not engage the ratchet teeth. The spindle 13 may be provided with a squared portion 14 which is adapted to receive a suitable tool whereby the spindle can be rotated relative to the housing 10 and the spindle is provided with an aperture 15 adapted to receive a wire 15a of a wire fence which is required to be tightened by turning the spindle.
