Abstract

Primary aromatic amines are prepared by heating the distillation residue obtained from the product of phosgenation of an aromatic primary amine, after distilling off the corresponding isocyanate, in an aqueous solution containing from 2.5 to 6.25 mols. of alkali metal hydroxide per 1000 gms. of solution at a temperature of from 180 DEG to 350 DEG C. until the distillation residue is converted by reaction with water to the aromatic amine. The process is particularly suitable for the preparation of 2,4- and 2,6-tolylene diamines from the residue obtained when a mixture of 2,4- and 2,6-tolylene diamines is phosgenated. It may also be used, for example, to produce amines from the residues obtained when phenyl isocyanate, diphenyl methane diisocyanates and naphthalene diisocyanates are formed by the phosgenation of the corresponding amines.
