Abstract
1,046,541. Locks. H. J. MODREY. Jan. 20, 1964 [May 27, 1963], No. 2367/64. Heading E2A. A lock for a door, window, or like closure comprises a bolt assembly 1, Fig. 1, and a striker 2 having a bolt receiving slot 17, the bolt assembly including a bolt, and a slide 6 axially slidable relatively to the bolt, the bolt having an enlarged head 5a and a shank 5 of reduced cross-section, the dimensions of the bolt, the slide, and the slot in the striker being such that the slot 17 can accommodate either the bolt head alone or the shank and the slide together so that after the bolt head has passed through the slot and the shank is accommodated therein, the slide can also enter the slot and prevent withdrawal of the bolt from the striker. In one embodiment the bolt is pivoted in a housing 3, Figs. 1 and 3, open at one end and supported in a cylindrical mounting hole by screws 12, 13 in escutcheons 8a. The pivot pin 7 for the bolt also secures a sleeve 4 which is removed when the housing is to be mounted in a rectangular hole. The slide 6 floats within the housing 3 and is urged into engagement with the bolt by a spring 8. A slot 6b in the slide is aligned with slots 3a in the housing and 8a in the escutcheon and receives a key member 20, 24, or 28. In operation the bolt assembly is slid towards the striker 2. The bolt is first contacted by the edge of the slot 17 in the striker the bolt is raised and the slide 6 pushed back against the action of the spring 8. When the bolt head has fully entered the slot 17, space is available for the slide 6 which then advances into the slot 17 under the action of spring 8 to lock the bolt in position. To prevent opening of the lock by a knife or the like the striker has a recess 16 into which fits the sleeve 4. To unlock the bolt the slide 6 is withdrawn by rocking the key member 20, 25 or 28. Of the key members, 20 and 28 are removably secured in the bolt assembly by engagement of the notch 22 or 30 with the slide 6 whilst the one 24 may be removed like a conventional door key by virtue of the sloping edge 26a to its notch 26. The key member 28 is secured to an operating wire 31 and is designed to be remotely operated mechanically or by a solenoid. In a second embodiment for a sash window, Fig. 11, the bolt 45 has a slot 46 engaging a pin 47 and is thus slidable into and out of its housing 42. A spring 53 urges the bolt into its retracted position in which it presses against an arm 56 on the slide 55 to hold the latter retracted against the action of a weaker spring 59. To lock the bolt a key is inserted into the hole 57 and pushes the bolt forwards in a zig-zag path into a hole 41a in the striker. The slide 55 advancing under the action of the spring 59 locks the bolt in position. To unlock the bolt the key is pushed against the arm 56 of the slide which is thus retracted and the bolt is withdrawn by the action of the spring 53.
