Abstract

An electrical conductor (e.g. for supplying current to an anode or which, when coated with Pt, Rh or Ir, may itself serve as an anode either in the electrolytic manufacture of Cl2 or in the cathodic protection of underwater structures such as piers and jetties) comprises a casing of Ti and a core of Al, Zn, or Sn or an alloy of at least two of these metals, the core being cast inside the casing under controlled conditions (see Division B3) whereby the casing and the core are electrically and mechanically connected by an interlayer of an alloy of Ti with the core metal. The term Ti includes alloys based on Ti and having anodic polarization properties comparable with those of Ti. Examples are Ti-Zr containing up to 14% Zr, alloys of Ti with up to 5% of Pt, Rh or Ir and alloys of Ti with Nb or Ta containing up to 10% of the alloying constituent. Fig. 5 shows a Ti casing 1 welded at 25 to a Ti end closure 5 and containing an Al core 3 with an alloy interlayer 14. The closure 5 is coated with Pt at 26 and fits an electrolytic cell. Fig. 6 shows a conductor suitable for use in protection application which comprises a Ti casing 1, Al core 3, alloy interlayer 14 and a Pt coating 27. Fig. 7 (not shown) illustrates a conductor, comprising a Ti casing, Al core and alloy interlayer, one end of the conductors having a Pt coating and being force-fitted into a graphite anode plate taught in Specification 881, 625. A threaded Cu rod is screwed into the upper end of the Al core. Fig. 9 shows a conductor comprising a Ti casing 1, Al core 3, Ti-Al alloy layer 14, iron or steel core 31, alloy interlayer 33 between the Al and the iron or steel and a screw-in or force-fitted Cu rod 34. <PICT:1045966/C6-C7/1> <PICT:1045966/C6-C7/2> <PICT:1045966/C6-C7/3>
