Abstract

1,044,921. Vehicle mirror mountings. J. R. NEWBY (Delbar Products Inc.). Feb. 3, 1964, No. 4471/64. Heading B7J. [Also in Division E2] A universal joint for a vehicle rear-view mirror which will accommodate vertical and horizontal misalignment has a detent so that if the mirror is swung inwardly to avoid an obstruction it will re-engage the detent when moved back and so be correctly positioned. The mirror is carried by arms 25 and is supported from the vehicle by arms 15, 16. A detent plate 37 forming part of the joint has protuberances 37a engaging projections 38 on the arm 25 and has protuberances 37b engaging ball-headed elements 39 to accommodate any misalignment. The elements 39 are mounted on an adjustment plate 40 threaded on a hinge 33 and locked by a nut 33b whereby the mirror can be set at any required angle. The projections 38 are not seated so deeply in the protuberances 37a as are the elements 39 in their protuberances 37b, this ensures that when the mirror is swung about the bolt 33 the elements 38, 37a will disengage and subsequently re-engage. A spring 42 prevents looseness in the joint when the mirror is swung inwardly. In other embodiments, the spring is replaced by a resilient pad, or the detent plate 37 may carry projections instead of the seatings 37a, 37b. The projections may be hardened pins.
