Abstract

An improvement in a process for the preparation of oxygenated products, especially cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol, wherein a hydrocarbon is selectively oxidized in the presence of a boron compound so as to form a reaction mass containing a boron ester and unreacted hydrocarbon, wherein the reaction product is hydrolysed so as to obtain boric acid and hydrocarbon oil containing unreacted hydrocarbon and oxygenated products, and wherein said boric acid is recovered as a solid and used in a subsequent hydrocarbon oxidation reaction, which improvement comprises washing said recovered boric acid so as to maintain a high selectivity to said ester in said subsequent oxidation. The washing liquid may suitably be water, the starting hydrocarbon, oxygenated products obtained in the oxidation, or purified "hydrocarbon oil" (i.e., the organic liquid phase resulting from the hydrolysis of the reactor effluent, which has been purified by caustic washing or distillation). Where cyclohexane is the starting material the order of preference of the washing liquids is (1) purified cyclohexane-oil, (2) cyclohexanol and/or cyclohexanone, (3) water, (4) cyclohexane.
