Abstract

A method of continuously recovering metal by electrolysis from an ionized metal compound forming an electrolyte in an electrolytic cell comprising passing D.C. between a cathode comprising coaxial spaced surfaces and an anode mounted together with at least one scraper blade inside the annular cavity formed by the cathode surfaces, means for producing relative rotation about the axis of the cavity between the cathode surfaces and the anode and scraper blade so that cathodically deposited metal is continuously scraped from the cathode, a sump in the floor of the cell for collecting the detached metal and an opening from the sump for withdrawing the accumulated metal. As shown the cathode comprises coaxial cylindrical plates 6, 7 joined by bridge pieces 8 and supported from a spider 9 carried by a driven vertical shaft 10. Anodes 15 which may be enclosed in filter bags and doctor blades 16 in scraping contact with the cathode surfaces are supported by a ring 13 supported from the outer wall of an annular tank, a doctor blade being arranged at each sump location 4, recesses 3 in the outer tank wall allowing access to the sumps. Purified particulate silver is obtained by electrolysis of silver nitrate. Reference is also made to replacement of anodes as they are consumed and to obtaining purified metals from impure metal stock. <PICT:1044776/C6-C7/1>
