Abstract

A fire extinguisher, Figs. 1 to 8 (not shown) containing, for example, carbon dioxide, has a main outlet valve piston 6 controlled by a pilot valve 20. Both valves are normally held closed by pressure communicated to a chamber above the piston through a passage 9 in the piston. The pilot valve may be opened manually by a lever 60 to vent the chamber and allow the main valve to open. Outlet pressure communicated to a second piston 25 through a passage 29 then holds the pilot valve open, and piston 6 engages a fixed seal 15 to close the passage 9. The pilot may also be opened by pressure from an explosive charge held in place by a plug 36. A safety bursting disc 42 is provided. The extinguisher is filled through a valve 38. The outlet 17 has a ball check valve 19 opened by a pipe coupling, and a check valve may be fitted in passage 29. In a system including a battery of extinguishers 47 to 54, Figs. 4 and 5, two of the extinguishers, 47 and 48, are operated by the levers 60 and the remainder then operate automatically by pressure communicated through a manifold 56.
