Abstract

1,044,640. Electrophotographic materials. RANK XEROX Ltd. July 31, 1963 [Aug. 1, 1962 (2)], No. 30346/63. Heading H1K. An electrophotographic plate comprises a transparent electrically conductive support bearing an optically transparent layer of a resin, made by reacting an unsaturated silane with an aminoalkyl silane, upon which is a selenium layer applied at a substrate temperature of from 57‹ C. to 67‹ C. Exposure of the plate is to take place through the support. A suitable support material is glass made conductive by a surface layer of tin oxide, copper iodide, or metal. In the specific example a tin oxide coated glass plate is dipped in a solution of a resin formed by reacting vinyl triethoxy silane with γ-aminopropyl triethoxy silane. After the resin film has dried the plate is held within the specified temperature range and selenium evaporated on. The red sensitivity and the dark resistance vary with the precise substrate temperature. The temperature range is thought to be related to the formation of some degree of selenium crystallinity at the interface between the silicone resin and the selenium. It is also thought that the variation in behaviour of the materials with changing polarity depends on the formation of an electric dipole layer at this interface. The exposure characteristics of Figs. 1 to 4 (not shown) compare the materials of the invention with similar plates lacking the silicone layer.
