Abstract
A process for quenching hot metal which comprises subjecting the metal in rapid succession first to treatment with an aqueous medium to effect a partial quenching and then to treatment with an organic medium comprising a chlorinated biphenyl compound or a mixture of such compounds. The two media may be successively sprayed on to the metal, or preferably, are employed together in a vessel wherein they exist as separate phases, the aqueous phase which may be brine being the supernatent phase; and the object to be quenched being held therein for perhaps 16-32 secs, prior to being submerged in the lower, organic phase. The latter phase comprises at least50% of chlorinated biphenyl which may contain 20-60%, or preferably 40-50% by weight of combined chlorine and may also comprise a wide variety of other organic substances: e.g. mineral oil, trichlorobenzene-up to 15% by weight of the chlorinated biphenyl present, viscosity modifiers, organic sulphonates, &c.
