Abstract
1,043,847. Rotary drum mixers. FIBERFIL IAG. Sept. 18, 1963 [Sept. 18, 1962], No. 36734/63 Heading B1C. A continuous discharge blender or tumbler comprises a rotary drum 12 of small axial length in relation to its diameter and having a diametrical partition 15. Material is fed into the inclined hollow shaft 11 and passes through a slot 24 into the first chamber 16 where it is tumbled by flights 20 until it builds up to the level of an aperture 26 in the partition 15, through which it passes into the second chamber 17. Here it is again tumbled by flights 20, a proportion falling on the shoot 30 which delivers it into the hollow shaft for discharge or transfer to the next drum of a series on the shaft, see also Fig. 1 (not shown). The first chamber 16 may also have a shoot 34; this plays no part in the mixing operation, but if the direction of rotation is reversed the broad outer ends of the shoots 30, 34 act as scoops to discharge the apparatus rapidly. As shown, the drums are hexagonal and have inspection and access covers 22. Residence time in chamber 16 is controlled by the number, size and desposition of the aperatures 26 and in chamber 17 by the arrangement of the flights and shoot.
