Abstract

1,043,705. Cam mechanisms. A. C. SAMPIETRO. June 24, 1963 [June 28, 1962], No. 24889/62. Heading F2K. [Also in Division F1] An I.C. engine valve gear includes a cam formed with a plurality of congruent cam lobes 18, Fig. 2, equal-angularly spaced about the cam-shaft axis and the same number of camfollowers equal-angularly spaced around the cam-shaft, each cam-follower actuating a valve 16. Four rocker arms 15 pivot on the spherical ends of sleeve 27 which slide on fixed tubes 26 and operate four exhaust valves 16 for each cylinder of an in-line two-stroke diesel engine. Hydraulic fluid passes along the tube 26 past a spring-loaded plate 29 having apertures 30 into the end of sleeve 27 to take up any clearance between the rocker arm and the cam and valve stem. A further double-cam 19, Fig. 3 (not shown), acts on roller 22 mounted on a pivoted rocker arm 21 to operate an injector 13. In a modification, the rocker arm 15 may mount a conical roller cam-follower. In another embodiment, two valves 42, Fig. 6 (not shown), for each cylinder are operated by rocker arms 47 mounted on adjustable pivots 48 and the injector 45 and remaining valves are operated by rocker arms 53, 60, Fig. 5 (not shown), pivoted on a shaft 54. In all embodiments the crank-shaft rotates at half crank-shaft speed for two-stroke engines and at a quarter crankshaft speed for four-stroke engines. Each cam may have two or more cams operating a corresponding number of rocker arms.
