Abstract

1,043,532. Boring earth &c. H. HOBHOUSE. Oct. 1, 1962 [July 1, 1961], No. 15408/66. Divided out of 1,043,531. Heading E1F. Drilling apparatus comprises hydraulic motors for respectively rotating the drill, feeding the drill, and driving the flushing fluid pump, the motors being inconnected so that the feed of the drill and the supply of flushing fluid are dependent on the resistance to rotation of the drill. The motors are supplied by a pump 29 (Fig. 1, not shown), the pressure in pipe supplying the drill rotating motor 38 actuating control valves 35, 36. If the torque of the motor 38 increases above a certain value, the increased pressure in the pipe actuates the valve 36 which opens valve 46 to increase flow to the motor 45 driving the flushing fluid pump to increase the flow of fluid. The increased torque also causes valve 36 to open valve 41 so that the flow to the feed motor 42 decreases with the resultant decrease in feed. If the torque on the motor 38 increases further the valve 36 opens valves 39 and 43a so that flow through the motor 42 and the feed are reversed. A still further increase in torque on the motor 38 causes the valve 36 to open valve 37 and stop the motor. If the torque on motor 38 decreases the valve 35 opens the valves 46, 40 to increase flow of flushing fluid and to increase the feed. The drill and motors may form a unit which is driven by a feed screw rotated by the motor 42, the unit being supported by a cable for vertical drilling. The unit may carry apparatus to impregnate the wall of the hole with silicones, and the unit may incorporate apparatus for maintaining the direction of drilling.
