Abstract

Polymers of conjugated dienes are made by effecting the polymerization of the diene in the presence of a catalyst system selected from TiCl4, TiB4, and TiI4, and at least one organo-aluminium aromatic thioetherate of the formula Al(R1,R2,R3)S(R4,R5) where R1 is selected from alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl, halogen, and hydrogen, R2 and R3 are selected from alkyl, aryl, and aralkyl radicals, R4 is an aromatic radical, and R5 is selected from saturated and unsaturated aliphatic, or alicyclic radicals, and aromatic radicals. The Specification contains lists of organoaluminium compounds and aromatic thioethers. The catalyst exemplified is aluminium triisobutyl thiodiphenyletherate and TiCl4. The catalyst may be preformed or formed in situ. The polymerization is preferably effected in a hydrocarbon diluent. The reaction is terminated by adding a solution of di-tertiary amyl hydroquinone in isopropyl alcohol. The diene may be butadiene or isoprene.
