Abstract
Alkyl esters of phthalic acids (containing 1-4 carbon atoms in the alkyl groups) which have been prepared by the oxidation of aromatic compounds not containing an a -tertiary carbon atom and, as a result, are contaminated with esters of formylbenzoic acid, are purified by treatment with molecular oxygen in the presence of a compound of chromium or/and a compound of nickel which is soluble in the reaction mixture, the treatment being followed by distillation. The treatment with molecular oxygen may be effected at 140-300 DEG C., preferably 200-280 DEG C., under atmospheric, reduced or raised pressure. The ester is preferably treated in the molten state, but a solvent may be present. The proportion of iron compounds in the ester should not exceed 20 p.p.m. The starting materials may be obtained by oxidizing xylene, toluic acid, tolyl aldehyde, methyl-benzyl chloride or ditolyethane with nitric acid, molecular oxygen or sulphur-ammonia and esterifying the product, which may be given a preliminary distillation. Examples are given of the purification of dimethyl terephthalate and dimethyl isophthalate, the naphthenates of chromium and nickel being used as catalysts.
