Abstract

1,043,140. Water-tube steam boilers. COMBUSTION ENGINEERING Inc. Nov. 5, 1964 [Nov. 26. 1963], No. 45223/64. Heading F4A. In a marine-type vapour generating and superheating apparatus comprising a furnace section 12, and a boiler bank section 14 with interposed superheating section 16, the front wall 20 of the furnace section 12 is formed by a tube panel extending between headers 44 and 40 and the side walls 18 (Fig. 2, not shown) and the roof 22 of the furnace section 12 are formed by tubes extending from lower headers 38 to upper headers 42 with alternate tubes from each side passing over the top of the furnace section 12 to connect with the upper header 42 of the opposite side. The floor of the furnace section 12, which is made to slope upwards towards its rear, is formed by a fluid circuit of parallelly arranged tubes 58 that extends from the lower header 40. These tubes 58 are bent at rightangles adjacent the superheating tubes 34 to traverse the height of the furnace before being bent again at right-angles to form a roof 60 over the superheater 32 and to connect with the steam and water drum 26. The tubes 62 adjacent the superheater tubes 34 are spaced so that alternate tubes are displaced and offset into normal alignment with adjacent tubes to form a screen that protects the superheater tubes 34 from radiant heat from the burners 24 whilst allowing the flue gases to pass through to heat the superheater section 16 and boiler bank section 14. The alternate tubes of the screen are returned to closely adjacent relationship level with the top of the superheater to form a gas baffle 64 to prevent gas flow into the void above the top of the superheater. The boiler bank consists of tubes 30 extending between the steam and water drum 26 and a water drum 28, these being also connected by downcomer conduits 46. The superheater 32 is formed of a plurality of inverted U-shaped tubes 34 connected to elongated headers 36. Diagonal external downcomer conduits 52 connect the steam and water drum 26 with the lower front wall header 40 and steam relief conduits 50 connect the said drum with the headers 42 and 44. In a modification the lower front wall header 40 is positioned mid-way along the floor (Fig. 4, not shown) and in a further modification the gas baffle 64 is formed by applying refractory material to the tubes (Fig. 3, not shown).
