Abstract

1,043,105. Automatic exchange systems. SIEMENS & HALSKE A.G. May 22, 1964 [May 22, 1963]. No. 21180/64. Heading H4K. In a system which comprises a plurality of telephone channels and a common signal path which passes signals characteristic of the identity of the channel over which it is desired to set-up a call, reception of the identification signal at a called station is acknowledged to the caller by reverting a signal over the chosen channel whereby reception of this signal confirms that the chosen channel is fault free and initiates release of the common path. The channels may be two- or four-wire interchange junctions utilizing voice or carrier transmission or they may be radio channels. The identification signals may be V.F. or pulsed D.C. signals. If reception of the acknowledgment signal is unduly delayed an alarm signal is given. In the exchange system shown in Fig. 1, the number of a called party, e.g. TnC, which has been requested by a calling party, e.g. TnA, is recorded in a register RA associated with an idle junction La which has been selected by group selector WA. The register seizes a transmitter SA and so causes the identity of the chosen junction to be transmitted over the common path Sa to a receiver EB at the tandem exchange B. The appropriate register RB is then seized and an acknowledgment signal is reverted over La. This signal releases Sa and initiates the transmission of sufficient digits by RA to RB and EB via La as to allow selector WB to be set to an idle junction Lb. Similarly transmitter SB then identifies this junction to exchange C whereafter the remainder of the digits are transmitted from RA to RC and EC so as to allow the connection to be completed. Signals may be transmitted over Sa and Sb in one or both directions. Arrangements may be made for preventing the transmission of any voice signals from TrA until the connection is completely set up whereby the usual V.F. guard circuits need not be provided. Guard circuits are of course not required at all in the signal paths. The normally required junction-relay-sets may. be incorporated solely in the signal paths (Fig. 2, not shown).
