Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of general formula Ar-O-CH2-C­CX wherein Ar is a phenyl or naphthyl group, which carries on the aromatic nucleus at least one substituent selected from halogen atoms and alkyl, alkoxy, alkynyloxy, phenyl, acyl, acylamino, carboxyl, carboalkoxy, carbamoyl, nitro and cyano groups and X stands for bromine, iodine or chlorine; and their preparation by (1) reacting a compound ArOCH2C­CH with a cuprous salt, recovering the resulting cuprous acetylide and reacting this with an elementary halogen, (2) reacting a compound ArOCH2C­CH with an elementary halogen in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide and in water, aqueous methanol or aqueous ethanol as reaction medium, or (3) adding an elementary halogen to a compound ArOCH2C­CH to form the dihalogenated compound and reacting this with an alkali metal hydroxide or alkoxide. Propargyl aryl ethers ArOCH2C­CH may be obtained by reacting propargyl halides in solvents with alkali metal salts of appropriate phenols or naphthols. Pentachlorophenyl 2,3-dibromoallyl ether is prepared from the propargyl ether by bromination in sunlit carbon tetrachloride.
