Abstract

1,042,904. Treating polyester filaments. MONSANTO CO. May 25, 1964 [June 4, 1963], No. 21542/64. Heading B5B. Molecular orientation is imparted to polyester filaments by impregnating the undrawn filaments with an aqueous emulsion the solids content of which comprises 70-100% by weight of a phosphate ester surfactant and 0-30% by weight of an amine salt of an alkyl phosphate or mixtures of such salts and then stretching the impregnated filaments. The phosphate ester surfactants may be those of formulµ where R is an alkyl radical having 8 to 20 carbon atoms, or an alkylphenyl radical in which the alkyl portion has 8 to 20 carbon atoms, M is hydrogen, ammonium, alkali metal or alkaline earth metal, and n is an integer from 2 to 20. The amine salts of alkyl phosphates may be those of formula where x is 1 or 2, y is 3-x, R is a normal, alkyl radical having 8 to 16 carbon atoms and NX is an oxyalkylene amine selected from mono-, di- and trimethylamine, the ethanol derivatives of monomethyl and dimethyl amine, and morpholine. The polyesters treated are those formed from dicarboxylic acids and glycols, and copolyesters or modifications of these polyesters and copolyesters. Many polymers are specified. The emulsion may be applied to the filament from a roll dipping into a bath of emulsion, or by use of a wick or split roll, or by passing the filaments through a bath of emulsion. The amount of " solids," i.e. the totality of ingredients of the emulsion exclusive of the aqueous medium deposited on the filaments is preferably 0À1-1À5% by weight of the filaments. In examples, filaments made from polyethylene terephthalate modified with methoxy polyethylene glycol and pentaerythritol are treated with (1) an aqueous emulsion containing 2% solids of which 70% by weight is the sodium salt of the phosphate diester of oleyl alcohol reacted with 7 moles of ethylene oxide, and 30% by weight is an equimolecular mixture of the bis-diethanolamine salt of monolauryl phosphate and the diethanolamine salt of dilauryl phosphate; and (2) an aqueous emulsion containing 10% by weight of the sodium salt of the phosphate diester of oleyl alcohol reacted with 7 moles of ethylene oxide. The filaments are then hot-drawn.
