Abstract

1,042,775. Moulding hollow articles. HAVEG INDUSTRIES Inc. Feb. 5, 1964 [March 1, 1963], No. 4818/64. Heading B5A. Sheets of foamed thermoplastic material are vacuum or blow-moulded to form containers, a lip being formed simultaneously by compression moulding. The bottom of the container may also be compression moulded. In the preferred embodiment shown in the Figure, a sheet is pressed into a female die 60 by a plunger 40, a lip being compression moulded upon the finished container by a ring 46, an annular depression carried by which co-operates with a ridge located about the female die. When the plunger has fully entered the die the sheet is transferred to the wall 70 of the mould cavity by applying a vacuum through channels 10, and the bottom of the container is compression moulded by the plunger. If required, compressed air from channel 82 in the plunger may assist the sheet transfer or may transfer it without the aid of the vacuum. In a second embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown), the lipforming ring is spring-biased around the plunger towards the die and the bottom of the container is not compression moulded. In a further embodiment (Fig. 1, not shown), the arrangement is as in Fig. 2 except that the lipforming ridge of the female die is absent, the material being forced into the recess in the lipforming ring by pressure between the ring and the flat upper surface of the die.
