Abstract

1,042,681. Abrasive tools. CHRISTENSEN DIAMOND PRODUCTS CO. Jan. 21, 1965, No. 2637/65. Heading B3D. [Also in Division E1] A rotary cutter comprises a generally cylindrical body adapted to be rotated about its axis and having axially spaced circumferential ridges extending around its periphery and disposed normal to the body axis and diamond cutting elements spaced circumferentially from each other and embedded in said ridges. A cutter 13 comprises a generally cylindrical matrix body 18, cast on a hub 14, e.g. of steel, the hub and body having interlocking ribs 19, 20. The hub is secured on a shaft 12 by a key 16. The body 18 has ridges 23 and troughs 24 normal to the axis of rotation and in which circumferentially spaced diamond cutting elements 26, 27 are embedded. The elements 27 are preferably staggered relative to the elements 26. The path swept by an element 26 may be spaced from, closely adjacent to, or overlap the path swept by an adjacent element 27. The cutter 13 has end faces normal to the axis of rotation. One end of the cutter may terminate in a ridge and the other end terminate in a trough, the diamond cutting elements in the end ridge and end trough being substantially flush with the end faces. A cutter assembly may be formed by securing a number of cutters on the shaft 12 with spacers 22 located in counterbores 21 in the hubs 14. Alternate cutters may have both ends terminating in a ridge, the intervening cutters having both ends terminating in a trough. The cutter assembly, e.g. 1-5 feet wide, may be mounted in a wheeled carriage movable over a concrete or other road, airstrip or the like, so as to flatten high spots and cut grooves in the surface either in the direction of travel of a vehicle or aircraft or transversely thereto. The cutter assembly is preferably rotated at 1000 R.P.M., and flushing liquid, e.g. water, is pumped against the surface and the adjacent periphery of the cutter assembly. The cutter assembly may be vertically adjustable relative to the surface.
