Abstract

1,042,113. Ionization counters. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 29, 1965 [Feb. 3, 1964], No. 4026/65. Heading HID. The window 19 of an X-radiation detector comprises a sheet of a synthetic substance, e.g. polyethylene or polypropylene, having a molecular composition substantially solely of carbon and hydrogen and the thickness of which has been reduced to less than 1 Á by stretching. The detector further comprises a wire electrode 10 supported axially by an insulating disc 9 in a cylindrical metal envelope 6 forming a second electrode. A filling of an ionizable gas, e.g. argon, neon, nitrogen or a mixture thereof, and a quenching vapour or gas, e.g. methane, isobutane, alcohol, a halogen or CO 2 , is constantly renewed through a tube 7 and leaves through apertures 8 in the disc 9. An electron beam from a cathode 1 is focused by electrodes 2 on to a specimen plate 3. The resulting X-rays 4 strike an analyzing crystal 5 and are reflected to a collimator 20 on the window 19. These components are mounted in a vacuum-tight envelope (not shown). X-rays not absorbed by the gas filling leave the detector through an aperture 14 covered by a thin plate 22 of synthetic substance. To detect radiation of different wavelengths the crystal 5 and detector may be simultaneously rotated, the latter at twice the angular velocity of the former.
