Abstract

104,193. Holmes, E. D. Aug. 8, 1916. Projectiles; projectile fuses. -Relates to shells divided into compartments containing charges which are adapted to be exploded successively. According to this invention, differently coloured lights are emitted when the explosions occur, the colour of each light indicating the compartment from which it originates. In the shell shown, the body is built up in three parts A<1>, A<2>, A<3> screwed together, each part containing a bursting- charge e<1>, e<2>, e<3> and a filling of shrapnel or high explosive. The rear charge e<3> is exploded first by a base or nose time-fuse, the other charges being successively fired by means such as trains d<2>, d<1> of fuse composition or by spring-controlled firing-pins and caps. The lights are emitted by material of known kind, placed with the explosive charge in each compartment.
