Abstract

The invention comprises bipyridinium salts of formula <FORM:1041028/C2/1> wherein the anion stands for the anion of an anticoccidial sulphonamide derivative, and the preparation thereof by the interaction of a compound of the formula <FORM:1041028/C2/2> wherein Y is an anion, other than an anion derived from sulphonamide derivatives, with a salt of an anticoccidial sulphonamide derivative, but excluding paraquat salts thereof.ALSO:Veterinary compositions suitable for the treatment of coccidiosis comprise one or more pyridine derivatives of the formula:- <FORM:1041028/A5-A6/1> wherein X stands for an anion, together with an inert non-toxic diluent or carrier. The anion may be a halide or methosulphate anion or an anion derived from an anticoccidial sulphonamide derivative e.g. sulphadimidine, sulphadiazine, sulphapyridine, sulphathiazole, sulphamilamide, sulphaquinoxaline or N-41-acetylaminobenzene-sulphonyl-4-nitroamiline. The compositions may contain one or more known anticoccidial agents e.g. the above specified sulphonamides, or salts thereof, 3-5-dimitrobenzamide, 2-methyl-3, 5-dimitrobenzamide or amprolium. The veterinary compositions may be in the form of aqueous solutions, solution tablets, pre-mix compositions or medicated foodstuffs, and are administered orally. The invention also comprises compositions consisting of one or more of the above pyridine derivatives and one or more known anticoccidial agents.
