Abstract
Trioxane copolymers are prepared at 40 DEG to 150 DEG C., in the presence of, as catalyst, a carbonium salt of formula <FORM:1040895/C3/1> where R is alkyl, X is oxygen or sulphur, R1 and R2 are the same or different and are hydrogen, alkyl, alkoxy or alkyl mercapto and Y(-) is an anion which is formed from a Lewis acid by addition of an alkoxy radical, an alkyl mercapto radical or a halogen radical. The comonomer may be a cyclic ether, cyclic acetal, a lactone or a cyclic thio compound, e.g. oxthiolane and dioxolane. The acid salt may be produced in situ by adding a compound. <FORM:1040895/C3/2> to the polymerization mixture and then adding the ferris acid. The polymerization may take place in bulk, solution or suspension.
