In an electromagnet having a laminated magnetic core comprising an armature 12 and a yoke 13 having therein an air-gap 14, the gap defining parts 13a, 13b are mutually fixed by a synthetic plastics, e.g. superpolyamide, envelope 16 and the gap has an inclined setting differing from the normal at right-angles to the yoke in order to be of width greater than the shortest possible. The gap may have a zig-zag form, and in Fig. 7 (not shown), be extended to form channels that are plastic filled. The plastics material also forms integral pins in holes 17, 18 in the armature and yoke, and may be applied to anchor short-circuited rings.
