Abstract

Two-way stretch is produced by employing stretch yarn in one direction of the fabric and crimping the yarns in the other direction by the heat-setting/crimp-interchange process of Specification 983,968. The stretch yarn may be singles or may be plied, both components being of stretch yarn or one being non-stretch; it may be core spun with an elastomeric filament core and a staple fibre sheath. In an example, a core of spandex filaments is covered with a blend of polyester and wool staple fibres and then doubled with a similar blended yarn without core. The yarn is used as warp with a similar two-ply coreless yarn as weft in a 2 x 2 twill weave. Finishing. The fabric is finished by dry blowing for 10 mins. at 50 p.s.i. steam pressure; scouring in a dolly for 1 hour at 20 DEG C using two baths of soap and soda; and stentering at 2 in. above wet width at 100 DEG C. The crimp-interchange treatment is then applied on a modified stenter for 30 secs. at 170 DEG C, followed by: relaxing on a winch for 10 mins, in water at 80 DEG C; stentering at 2 in. above wet width at 100 DEG C; heat-setting on a stenter at 1 in. above wet width for 1 min. at 180 DEG C; cropping on a solid bed machine, twice on the face and once on the back; decatising on a dry blowing machine for 1 min. at 50 p.s.i. steam pressure; open steaming and air cooling three times with the fabric completely relaxed in warp and weft directions; and finally pressing in paper overnight.
