Abstract

An aqueous paper coating composition comprising clay and starch is modified to produce improved wet rub resistance by reacting the starch with 5-10% of dialdehyde starch which is 90-100% oxidized. The composition may contain 32-40% of clay plus starch. The proportion of starch based on the clay may be 12-18%. The clay may be dispersed with the aid of disodium phosphate. The starch may be an acid-modified or hypochlorite-oxidized starch.
