Abstract
1,040,453. Electric can openers. BURGESS VIBROCRAFTERS Inc. April 9, 1963 [April 10, 1962], No. 14110/63. Heading B8D. A can opener, mounted on a work surface 50, has an electrically driven traction wheel 8 which may be retracted by manual operation of a handle 17 to enable the rim of a can to be inserted so that, on raising the wheel 8, the top of the can presses up a cutting blade 28 thereby causing the electric motors 4, 5 to be energized. The wheel 8 carried on a shaft 12 is driven from a shaft 10 round which the shaft 12 is caused to rotate in a guide slot 81 when a pivoted lever 18 is moved by means of the handle 17. The blade 28 is secured to a carrier 30 pivoted on a post 32, Fig. 10 (not shown), the carrier also having an aperture through which extends a stud 36 fastened to a switch 23. As the blade carrier 30 is pivoted upwards on raising the wheel 8 under the can rim, the stud 36 is lifted thereby closing contacts 25, 26, Fig. 8 (not shown). The can lid is held by a magnet 40. Being mounted at a given height from the surface 50, the opener is usually operating on cans of predetermined size; for dealing with larger cans, the opener is rotated, Fig. 3 (not shown), to enable a can, held below the level of the surface 50, to be opened.
