Abstract

A process for distilling solid carbonaceous materials, e.g peat, sawdust, wood chips, coal, tar sands and especially oil shales, comprises pyrolyzing the material in a first zone 7 by milling contact with solid heat-carrying bodies (metal, ceramic or alumina balls), separating the bodies from the carbonaceous residue (e.g. shale coke), in a second zone 14 burning the residue to produce heat-carrying ash, and in a third zone 16 pyrolyzing fresh material by contact with the ash. The bodies are circulated via 10, 11 through a heater 6 from which flue gases pass via 2, 3 to a cyclone 4 where the material is preheated to 300 DEG to 600 DEG F. At 15 the ash is separated from flue gases and passed to the zone 16 for contacting preheated fresh material. The zones 7, 16 are inclined revolving drums, and the drum 16 preferably contains metal balls. Pyrolysis temperatures of 750 DEG to 1300 DEG F. (371 DEG to 705 DEG C.) are mentioned. Two or more drums 16 may be employed, e.g. ash may be passed serially from one drum to the next, or the drum 7 may supply ash to two drums 16.
