Abstract
104,020. Berry, A. F. Feb. 16, 1916. Transformers.-The casing of an oil-cooled electric transformer has a cover which moves with the expansion and contraction of the oil, while excluding the atmosphere from the oil by means connected in part to the cover and in part to the casing. The cover b, Fig. 1, is in the form of a float provided with strips b<1> of wood or cork, and has an upturned rim c which passes underneath a flauged ring g detachably connected to the inner side of the casing. Apertures d<1> with flanges d are provided for the passage of the terminal conductors e and are covered by caps h; or one cap may be placed over all the apertures. The float contains a layer of oil to seal the passages between the caps, casing, and flanged parts of the float. A ledge n supports the float during transport. In a modification with external cooling-conduits k, Fig. 2, the float may be of a conical shape as shown, to assist the convection currents of the oil. It will also serve as a pocket to hold condensed water. In another modification, the cover is flexibly connected to the casing by a corrugated rim.
