Abstract
A hygroscopic packing for use in transferring moisture and/or heat comprises thin layers or sheets consisting of a non-metallic and inorganic material such as asbestos, alternate layers being corrugated and contact between adjacent layers being made by the ridges of the corrugations, is manufactured by impregnating the layers with a gel-forming liquid which is then concentrated by evaporation to produce a solid substance e.g. silica which remains distributed over fibres of the sheet material. The impregnant may be an organic silicic acid compound. Alternatively the layers may be initially impregnated with water glass and subsequently with an acid. Alternative materials which may be used for the carrier are porous ceramic or a structural mass of fine filaments of metal or mineral wool, having passages penetrating from end to end for the passage of gases.
