Abstract

Crude aqueous acetic acid from the oxidation of aliphatic hydrocarbons, is purified by distilling off the low-boiling impurities, distilling to give aqueous heads which are then extracted with a water-insoluble solvent comprising a hydrocarbon, a chlorine substituted hydrocarbon, or an ester of a carboxylic acid and the solvent is removed. The extraction may be continuous, and solvents mentioned are heptane, benzene, toluene, dichloroethane, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride and amyl acetate are mentioned. The solvents may be freed from the impurities by water washing or in the case of saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons by a concentrated sulphuric acid wash.
