Abstract

The invention comprises a process in which any basic dye is treated in aqueous solution with a stilbene or imidazole sulphonic acid or carboxylic acid salt yielding an almost insoluble precipitate of a dye suitable for use in inks of ball-point pens. The basic dye is brought into aqueous solution using inorganic or organic acids and this solution is mixed with an aqueous solution of a fluorescent stilbene or imidazole sulphamic or carboxylic acid in aqueous hydroxide, or amine solution. Equivalent amounts of the basic dye and stilbene or imidazole compound are used. The stilbene or imidazole compounds have the general formula <FORM:1039927/C4-C5/1> in which A is -CH = CH- or a ring of formula <FORM:1039927/C4-C5/2> X1 is selected from sulphonic or carboxylic acid groups or a salt thereof, X2 is hydrogen or sulphonic acid or a salt thereof, Y is a hydrogen atom or an amino or -NH-CO-NH2 or a group having the formula <FORM:1039927/C4-C5/3> <FORM:1039927/C4-C5/4> in which R1 is an amino or aliphatically substituted amino group and R2 is an amino group aliphatically or aromatically substituted, preferably a sulphonated aromatic group. The basic dyes used include those of phthalocyanine, xanthene, triphenylmethane and methine dyes.
