Abstract

1,039,544. Perforating. GARRETT CORPORATION. March 5, 1963 [March 7, 1962], No. 8767/63. Headings B3A and B3W. [Also in Divisions E1 and F2] A method of producing in a metal sheet having projection free surfaces, perforations having a width less than the thickness of the sheet, oomprises the steps of making cuts round portions of the sheet and displacing them out of the plane of the sheet, removing a predetermined amount of the exposed edges of each cut, and restoring the portions to the plane of the sheet. To form U-shaped slots, tabs are stamped and bent out, the cut edges or the whole sheet chemically etched (Figs. 1-4, not shown) while to produce straight slots the sheet is sheared and bent to form rows of staggered corrugations (Fig. 5, not shown) prior to etching, the sheet being rolled, pressed, or hammered after etching to flatten it again. A resistant coating may be applied to the sheet prior to the first step, to restrict etching to the cut edges.
