Abstract

[Also in Division F4] A shell and tube heat exchanger includes a header comprising a tube sheet 20 with flat plate area 38 and upwardly arid outwardly flared shoulder portion 40, and a hemispherical member 24 welded at 42 to said shoulder portion (see Division F4). The weld is made after the tubes 18 have been assembled in the plate area 38 and the heat generated at the weld is dissipated along the shoulder portion 40 before reaching this area, thereby preventing damage to the tubes or the tube to tube sheet joints by stress.
