Abstract
1,038,964. Rotary joints. BAXTER WOODHOUSE & TAYLOR Ltd., and E. H. TAYLOR. May 8, 1963 [Feb. 8, 1962], No. 18217/63. Divided out of 1,038,963. Heading F2G. [Also in Division A3] The shoulder, elbow, wrist, neck and leg joints of a pressure suit are provided with gastight ball races to facilitate movement. At the shoulders and neck the ball races are mounted in mouldings 3 and 8 respectively which may be integral, Fig. 2 (not shown), and are formed of double thickness rubber impregnated cloth. The ball races are retained behind a shoulder 11 of the moulding 3 and comprise two concentric and overlapping nylon rings 21, 22 and nylon or steel balls 23 running in oppositely facing V grooves in the rings. A rubber sealing ring 24 mounted in a groove in the inner ring 21 is forced into gas-tight contact with the outer ring by the pressure within the suit and slides on the outer ring upon relative rotation of the rings. A clip 12 surrounds the whole of the joint for tightening. Neck, elbow and wrist joints incorporating rings of modified cross-section are described with reference to Figs 3, 5 and 6 respectively (not shown).
