Abstract

1,038,683. Change-speed gear; chain tensioners. RUSTON-BUCYRUS Ltd. April 22, 1964 [April 29, 1963], No. 16643/64. Headings F2D and F2Q. [Also in Division E1] In self-propelled earth-boring rig the sprockets 40 for driving chains 41 for raising and lowering the drill string (not shown), a winch 46, and sprockets 39, 39a for driving endless tracks (not shown) are driven by gearing 33 in a housing 34. An electric motor 36 drives gears 65, 63 and a shaft 32, the sprockets 40 being rotated when clutch parts 60, 60a are engaged and the winch being rotated when clutch parts 60, 47 are engaged. The electric motor also drives the sprockets 39, 39a through gearing 64a, 38, a shaft 37 and clutches 57, 58. An hydraulic motor 35 drives the sprockets 40 at high and low speeds for drilling depending upon whether the gear 80 engages the gears 82 or 83, clutch parts 87, 86b being engaged. The torque on, and the weight of, the gear train and housing are respectively resisted by compression springs 102, 100. The tautness of the chains 41 is maintained by equalizers 90 mounted on the mast and each comprising pulleys 42, 43 mounted in slots in a channel 92 and biased to tension the chain by compression springs 94, 93. The channels are mounted on the mast by links 98, and pivoted plates 95 connected by a link 96 which ensures that each of the chains carries an equal load.
