Abstract

1,038,495. Flash bulbs. J.DeMENT. July 3, 1963 [July 10, 1962], No. 26403/63. Heading G2L. [Also in Division H3] A pumping cartridge for use in a laser comprises a sealed envelope bounded by a radially outer peripheral wall and by a light transmitting radially inner peripheral wall, a charge being placed within the envelope to generate light when ignited. As shown in Fig. 1 the cartridge 1 comprises a shock proof envelope defined by light transmitting external walls 2, 22 and internal wall 222, the latter forming a cylindrical passage into which is fitted a cylindrical laser rod 4. The envelope is surrounded by reflector R and contains charge 6 ignited by means of electrodes 3 which are connected to a source of e.m.f. situated in space 333. The ignitable charge 6 of metallic powder in an oxidizing atmosphere may be in the form of a relatively thick layer attached around the inside surface of wall 2, Fig. 3 (not shown) or as in Fig. 4 (not shown) loosely packed in the envelope. In Fig. 5 (not shown) the external wall 2 is curved along its length in a parabola, and the walls 22 angle out from the ends of the internal wall 222, the focus of the parabola defined by the wall 2 lying at the centre of the laser rod. The envelope may be divided into a number of separate longitudinal compartments by walls extending radially towards the laser rod, which walls may be of thermally insulating or conducting materials or a mixture of the two, Figs. 6-10 (not shown). When the compartments are separated by thermally insulating radial walls each compartment is provided with its own ignition electrodes and two separate charges can be ignited simultaneously, sequentially or individually as desired.
