In an automatic gain control or automatic frequency control arrangement for a television receiver, the output of the last I.F. stage 8 of the receiver is coupled via coils 12a, 12c to an amplifier 26 tuned to the intermediate frequency which only amplifies the synchronizing signal portions of the I.F. signal; for automatic gain control the output of the amplifier is applied to a detector 37 which provides a D.C. signal for controlling the gain of the R.F. and I.F. amplifier circuits 2, 6 and 7 and for automatic frequency control the output of the amplifier is applied to a discriminator (not shown) which provides a D.C. control signal for controlling the frequency of the local oscillator 4. The amplifier may operate in class B or C whereby only the large amplitude synchronizing portions of the I.F. signal are amplified or may derive its power supply from a frame scanning coil 24 via pick-up loop 31 so that the amplifier is gated during the synchronizing signal portions of the I.F. signal.
