Abstract

[Also in Division B4] A device for taking samples of high temperature liquids, such as molten metal, comprises a completely closed tube 1 made from high melting-point material, such as quartz or quartz glass, and having a point of weakness, where the tube is intended to melt or fracture, formed by closing the tube with a sealing element 2 made from a non-porous material, such as glass, of a lower melting point than that of the material of tube. The tube is evacuated before the sealing member is fused on to the tube at a point 3 and, at this point, the stress in the tube material is increased by varying its wall thickness. In modifications, the tube may be bent into a hook shape or, instead of a bulbous sealing element 2, a hole may be formed in the wall of the tube and closed by a sealing element. The device is formed with a restriction 4 so that, in use, when the scaling element melts or fractures, the liquid is drawn into the tube at a slow rate.
