Abstract
In a process for the polymerization of ethylene, with or without comonomers, in a tubular reactor at elevated pressures and temperatures in the presence of a polymerization initiator, cooling is effected by circulating a heat transfer fluid through a jacket surrounding the reactor, the temperature of the fluid being maintained below the reaction temperature and at a temperature in the range of 30 DEG to 140 DEG C. The polymerization may be carried out at 40-400 DEG C. and at pressures of 5000-60,000 p.s.i. Comonomers specified are vinyl acetate, ethyl acrylate, vinyl propionate, propylene, butene-1, acrylonitrile and vinyl chloride. Chain transfer agents (many specified) may also be present. In examples, oxygen is used as the polymerization initiator (many others are specified elsewhere) and water is used as the heat transfer medium.
