Apparatus for use in a woodworking machine which is suitable for forming a tongue or a tonguelike tenon 9 on a workpiece 10, comprises a milling unit 6 for mounting on the machine and having one or more milling tools 8 which are adapted to be advanced with respect to the workpiece for the purpose of working to width a tongue or tongue-like tenon, which has been formed on the workpiece, to provide in one operation one or more tenons of desired width, the workpiece being retained in the same clamping position as that which it occupied during the formation of the tongue or tongue-like tenon. The machine has a drilling head 1 movable along guides towards and away from a laterally movable work-table 2, which has a lateral stop 5 and an air-operated clamping device 4, a milling tool 3, and a cutting tool, such as a circular saw (not shown). The apparatus is formed with a ring 13 which is clamped to the drilling head 1 and has a supporting rail 12 grooved on its front face to receive a member 18 having one end 19 bent over and connected to the rod 16 of a pneumatic or hydraulic piston and cylinder device 17 connected by an arm 20 to the rail, whereby the member is moved relative to the rail 12. The front face of the member 18 is formed with parallel inclined grooves 22 which are engaged by shoulders 24 on a slide 23 restrained for vertical movement on the rail 12 by guides 25 engaging machined edges of the rail. The slide 23 is provided with a T-shaped groove 31 along its front face which receives bolts adjustably securing clamps 11 to the slide. Each clamp receives a member 7 carrying a milling tool 8 which may be driven by compressed air. Adjustable wedge-shaped members 33 are provided to adjust the distance of the cutters from the slide 23. When used to cut the tenon 9 of a frame member to be connected to a round chain leg, the milling tool 3 and the milling tools 8 have radii the same as the chair leg. The workpiece is held on the table 2 against the stop 5 by the device 4, and the device 17 is disconnected from the fluid pressure source so that a spring moves the rail 18 to its right-hand position so that the slide 23 is in its lowermost position. The cutters 8 are adjusted to the correct distance apart for the width of the tenon and the cutter 3 adjusted to the correct height. The workpiece is cut to the correct length and the table is then moved to traversethe workpiece past the cutter 3 to cut the tenon 9. Thereafter the feed of the drilling unit 1 advances the cutters 8 into the workpiece to cut the tenon to the desired width, the cutters producing the correct curve on the workpiece for the junction with the chair leg. When it is desired to cut a tenon on a workpiece which is to be joined to a rectangular member, after operation on the workpiece by the cutters 3 which produce flat base surfaces, and the return of the table to its initial position, the drilling unit is advanced and air is supplied to the cylinder 17 to cause movement of the rail and hence vertical movement of the slide 23 so that the cutters 8 machine the tongue to the correct width. The apparatus may have a single milling cutter 8, in which case, more than one traverse of the cutter is necessary to machine the tongue to width, or three or more cutters may be used to produce a plurality of tenons on a single or plurality of workpieces.
