Abstract

1,038,138. Tubular heat exchangers. N. P. BHATTACHARJEE. Aug. 23, 1963 [Aug. 24, 1962], No. 32685/62. Heading F4S. An apparatus for the rapid cooling of the mixed phase flow of high temperature reaction products obtained, for example during thermal or catalytic conversions of hydrocarbons, at temperatures up to 1600‹ F. and pressures up to 300 atmospheres, comprises an elongated cooling chamber. The upper half of a stainless steel cooling chamber 1, Fig. 1 (not shown) is finned and loses heat directly to the atmosphere and a casing 5, Fig. 2 (not shown) encloses and is bolted or riveted to the lower half 4 of the chamber to form an annular passage 44 for cooling fluid, e.g. air, water or a supercooled heat transfer medium, which enters through inlet 21 at the base of the casing, passes through evenly spaced ports 15 in a baffle ring 16 and at the top of the passage is directed by inclined faces 24 of ring 23 to an outlet 22, an elastic gasket ring in a groove 45 forms a sliding seal at the bottom of the casing. Within and extending through the entire length of chamber 1 is a cooling device comprising two concentric tubes 27, 28, Fig. 4 (not shown) secured to the centre of an annular plate 32 having a radial inlet and outlet 37, 34 respectively connected to the annular space 29 between the tubes and to the neck of tube 28 these spaces being connected at their upper ends by a passage 31. Holes 40 in an annular ring 39 at the base of the space-29 ensure uniform flow of the cooling fluid, e.g. water. The ring 32 is bolted to the remainder of the apparatus and contains passages 42 through which the reaction products flow. The outer casing may extend over the entire length of the chamber.
