Abstract

An anti-oxidant for essential oils gasoline, lubricating oils and greases, mineral oils and waxes and aliphatic hydrocarbons comprises 7:8-dihydrodinaphth-(1,2-6:21,11-5)azepine (see Division C2). An example describes the stabilization of a mineral oil; a synthetic lubricant polyester prepared from sebacic acid, trimethylolpropane, and caprylic acid; and a lubricant ester consisting of trimethylolpropane tripelargonate.ALSO:The novel compound <FORM:1036693/C2/1> made by heating 1,2-bis-(1-aminonaphthyl-2) ethane in the form of the di-orthophosphate, hydrochloride, sulphate or p-toluenesulphonate, preferably to at least the melting point and in the absence of oxygen, is used for stabilizing organic compounds against oxidation. 1-2-Bis-(1-aminonaphthyl-2) ethane is made by hydrogenating in presence of, e.g. Raney nickel or platinum group metal, the corresponding 1-nitronaphthyl compound which in turn can be obtained by oxidizing 2-methyl-1-nitronaphthalene with an alkyl formate or nitrite, preferably at -5 DEG to +5 DEG C. in presence of alkali metal alkoxide and an inert solvent. Compounds stabilized include hydrocarbons, e.g. gasoline, oils, greases, and waxes, natural or synthetic polymers, e.g. rubber, vinyl and vinylidene polymers, poly-ethylenes and propylenes, poly-ester, amide and urethane resins, aldehydes, e.g. heptaldehyde, unsaturated fatty acids and esters, e.g. ricinoleic acid and methyl oleate, esters of trimethylolpropane, trimethylpentanol, neopentyl glycol (di)-, pentaerythritol with one or more carboxylic acids, e.g. trimethylolpropane tripelargonate lub. oils based on polyesters derived from polyvalent alcohols and saturated aliphatic or aromatic mono- and di-carboxylic acids, e.g. trimethylolpropane, sebacic, and caprylic acids, vitamins, essential oils, ketones, and ethers.ALSO:A stabilizer for addition and condensation polymers, e.g polyvinyl chloride, synthetic rubbers, polyethylene and polypropylene, alkyd resins, polyurethanes and polyamides comprises 7:8 - di - hydrodinaphth - (1,2 - 6:21, 11 - F)-azepine (see Division C2). Examples describe the preparation of a sheet from high-density polyethylene, polypropylene, a synthetic rubber, and polyvinyl chloride containing 0.1% azepine; and the stabilizing of a synthetic lubricant polyester from sebacic acid, trimethylolpropane, and caprylic acid with the azepine.ALSO:An anti-oxidant for organic compounds comprises the novel compound 7 : 8-dihydrodinapth-(1, 2-b; 21, 11-5) azepine (see Division C2). Hydrocarbons, e.g. gasoline lubricating oils and greases, mineral oils and waxes (see Division C5) addition and condensation polymers (see Division C3) aldehydes, fatty acids and esters, vitamins and essential oils, ketones and ethers are mentioned and examples describe the stabilization of n-keptaldehyde, and trimethylolpropane tripelargonate.
